WTO event explores role of trade in helping reduce, reuse and recycle waste
World Trade Organisation
June 07, 2017
To
mark World Environment Day, a number of public and private sector
experts gathered at the WTO on 7 June to discuss how trade could support
business opportunities regarding the reduction and management of waste.
Participants in the informal talk organized by the WTO’s Trade and
Environment (TED) Division also explored environmental, economic, and
legal considerations concerning waste management worldwide.
Ambassador
Alvaro Cedeño Molinari (Costa Rica) said that while climate change and
environmental degradation might seem like far-off problems, they will
pose significant challenges within the lifetime of today’s children. He
spoke of repurposing waste as a resource through “circular
manufacturing”, where waste products are used as inputs for other
products.
“The proposition I would like to
bring today is to start seeing waste not just going into the landfill
but something that can be used,” he said.
One
approach is to treat discarded plastic as a resource to help alleviate
the impact of plastic waste on ocean ecosystems and the associated
fishing, transport and tourism industries, Gaël Potter, Lead Scientist
of Oceaneye, said.
